How do I know if I have alcohol flush reaction?
The term alcohol flush reaction, also known as “Asian flush” or “Asian glow,” refers to facial redness that can occur after consuming alcohol.
This response is commonly associated with a genetic variation affecting the ALDH2 enzyme, which plays a role in alcohol metabolism. This variation is more prevalent in people of East Asian descent, but it is not exclusive to any single ethnic group.
When ALDH2 activity is reduced, the body may process alcohol differently, which can lead to a buildup of acetaldehyde — a natural byproduct of alcohol metabolism. This is thought to contribute to flushing and other short-term effects some people experience after drinking.
These may include facial redness, headaches, nausea, and general discomfort, although individual responses can vary.
